                             PREFACE

Mortality Statistics presents selected 2000 mortality data for the state of Arkansas, the five
public health regions, and the 75 counties (see map on back cover). Many tables display age, sex,
and/or race distributions. Included are various charts and maps to facilitate interpretation of
data. National statistics are from the National Center for Health Statistics publications.

Section 1 - INTRODUCTION - consists of an overview of Arkansas mortality statistics, background
information, and the technical notes which describe the rates, population bases, methods and
procedures used in this report.

Section II - GENERAL MORTALITY - contains many county-specific tabulations of total deaths by age,
sex, and race. This section also includes the most detailed listing of the number of deaths by the
three-character underlying cause of death in the report.

Section III - 39 SELECTED CAUSES OF DEATH - aggregates the causes to the new standard summary
list of 39 Selected Causes of Death. The data in this section are tabulated by age, sex, race, and
county.

Section IV - LEADING CAUSES OF DEATH - provides a number of summary statistics for those conditions
which most frequently result in death. The summary list of 113 selected causes of death is used in
this section. Detailed age, sex, and race-specific data are tabulated.

Section V - INFANT MORTALITY - focuses on infant mortality (age under 1 year), including the
subcategories of neonatal (age less than 28 days), and postneonatal (age 28 days to 364 days), by
the leading causes of death.

Section VI - SPECIFIC CAUSES OF DEATH - consists of tables, graphs, and maps for selected leading
causes of death. The tables include sex-specific crude and age-adjusted rates. The maps depict the
total crude and age-adjusted rates.
