Little Rock—The
Office on Women’s Health, through Eve E. Slater, MD,
Assistant Secretary of Health, invited governors, mayors
and tribal leaders to issue proclamations declaring
the week of
May 12 – 18, 2002, as National Women’s Health Week.
National
Women’s Health Week was initiated in May 2000 by a coalition
of public and private organizations dedicated to raising
awareness of women’s health issues. National Women’s
Health Week is now celebrated in the spring, beginning
on Mother’s Day.
State
and community organizations, partners and volunteers
are working to increase awareness of key women’s health
issues, such as breast and cervical cancer, osteoporosis
and cardiovascular disease. Please celebrate National
Women’s Health Week and recognize the extraordinary
progress in women’s health over the past 100 years.
American women hold a unique and special place in our
society and contribute to the nation and its families
in countless ways. Many communities have planned activities
that can be found at www.4woman.gov.
