Little Rock —
On
August 7, Governor Mike Huckabee authorized the release
of $1,000,000 for use in the emergency control of
mosquitoes that spread West Nile Virus and other
mosquito-born diseases.
These funds were made available to
Intergovernmental Cooperative Councils whose membership
is comprised of the mayors of the incorporated cities
within a county and the county judge.
A team comprised of representatives of the
University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service,
the Arkansas State Plant Board, the Arkansas Department
of Emergency Management and the Arkansas Department of
Health reviewed applications and released funding to all
75 Arkansas counties for use in mosquito abatement and
education to stop the spread of West Nile Virus and
other mosquito-born diseases.
Funding
was based on all counties receiving a base amount of
$10,000; additional funding was based on population and
square miles. Letters were sent on Friday, August 23, to Intergovernmental
Councils acknowledging the individual county
allocations. The
letters included guidelines from the State Plant Board
on licensing of products.
The funds are to be used for purchasing chemical
larvicide for control of mosquitoes and for education of
the public on mosquito abatement procedures.
According
to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, larviciding
involves applying pesticides to breeding habitats to
kill mosquito larvae. Killing mosquito larvae before
they emerge as adults can reduce or eliminate the need
for ground or aerial application of pesticides to kill
adult mosquitoes. Larviciding is also an efficient use
of the emergency funding. According to the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension
Service, a one-acre pond can be treated for $6 to $8 a
week.
Money
can be used to purchase equipment for hand or backpack
application of the larvicide.
Money is not to be used for the purchase of
adulticides, adulticiding equipment or personnel costs.
The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management
will be issuing checks to the counties as soon as
possible.
