Race for the Cure logoOne in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her lifetime. The American Cancer Society and the Komen Foundation estimates that approximately 192,200 women will face a breast cancer diagnosis in 2001 and that over 40,200 women will die from the disease.

In Arkansas, 1,700 women are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer and 400 to die from the disease. With early detection of localized breast cancers, the survival rate remains 96 percent.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in Dallas, Texas, in 1982, by Nancy Brinker in memory of her sister, Susan Goodman Komen, who died in 1980 after a three-year struggle with breast cancer.

The Komen Race for the Cure® is the Komen Foundation's signature breast cancer awareness and fund-raising event which supports its mission: to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment.

The Arkansas Affiliate of the Komen Foundation was organized during 1992 to fight breast cancer at home and is one of 115 Komen affiliates in the United States.

This is the 8th anniversary for the Komen Arkansas Race for the Cure® which has grown to be one of the largest Komen Race for the Cure® events in the nation - the largest race in Arkansas - with more than 27,000 participants in 2000. Races will be held in more than 100 U.S. cities and 3 foreign countries this year.

With proceeds from the Race, the Komen Arkansas Affiliate has awarded more than $1,000,000 in grants used to support breast cancer awareness, screening, treatment and education programs throughout the state since the first Race in 1993. In addition, the Arkansas Affiliate provides breast cancer education programs including Breast Self Exam (BSE) to businesses, civic organizations, churches and other groups.
