Little Rock -- Today, on the lawn in front of the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH), Dr. Fay Boozman, director, joined hundreds of health department colleagues in the only race rally in Central Arkansas to promote the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and Three Miles of Men Program.
The purpose of the rally was to encourage ADH participation in the race and issue a challenge to win, for the fourth year in a row, the coveted “Largest Government Agency Team” Komen Award. Last year, 124 ADH colleagues, friends and family members participated in the 2003 Arkansas Race for the Cure, raising $2,400.00 for breast cancer programs in Arkansas.
Also at the rally, Health Department breast cancer survivors spoke about the importance of the race and the critical need for Arkansans to practice breast self examination and receive mammograms as part of early detection of breast cancer.
Dr. Boozman spoke about the importance of the ADH BreastCare program that provides free breast and cervical cancer screening, education, diagnosis and breast cancer treatment services to low-income women in Arkansas. He encouraged all women to call the toll-free 1-877-670-2273 to find out if they qualify. To date, the BreastCare program has provided 11,650 screening exams.
Some 35,000-race participants are expected for the 2004 “Race for the Cure” in downtown Little Rock on October 9 at 8:00 a.m. Last year over 1,300 men participated in the Three Miles of Men program to cheer and support the runners along the racecourse. Seventy-five percent of all money raised from the Arkansas Race for the Cure stays in Arkansas to fund grant programs for education and awareness, screening, and treatment.
