BACK TO Prairie Grove News Release (April 9, 2002)

The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) staff proposes to collect air and well water samples during the Prairie Grove environmental investigation.

The Department will conduct air sampling at a galvanizing facility located in Prairie Grove. Samples will be collected in areas where people may be exposed to air emissions from the facility. In addition, an upwind background sample will be collected and sample results will be compared to see if the air quality is different at the facility, and if contaminants may be released into the air at unsafe levels.

The samples will be analyzed for the following parameters:
  • alkaline dust (total hydroxides)

  • lead

  • zinc

  • cadmium

  • chromium

  • hydrochloric acid

Some residents who live in Prairie Grove use private wells, which are not connected to the public water supply, as a supplemental water source. In addition, persons living in some rural areas use private wells for their drinking water supply.

Three private wells within Prairie Grove and three wells located outside the corporate limits will be tested to determine if the wells are contaminated with metals, pesticides or volatile organic chemicals.

The samples will be analyzed for Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Primary and Secondary Drinking Water Standards parameters. Results will be compared to these standards for comparison purposes only when the wells are used for non-potable water sources. The exact number of samples will be determined by ADH staff based on the above criteria, and the number of community members willing to participate in the survey.

Sampling Documentation

All sampling activities will be documented in a bound logbook to maintain a complete environmental sampling record. The time, date, location, GPS coordinate and any additional field observations will be recorded when samples are collected. Photographs will be taken at each site.

Sample Procedures

Samples will be collected as follows:
  • Alkaline dust samples - collected on 1.0 micron PTFE filter and analyzed by NIOSH Method 7401

  • Lead, zinc, cadmium, chromium - collected on 0.8 micron 37 mm MCE filters and analyzed by NIOSH Method 7300

  • Hydrogen chloride - collected on silica gel tube and analyzed by NIOSH method 7903

  • Water well samples - collected in accordance with EPA Method Standards for the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Quality Assurance/Quality Control

Chain-of-custody procedures will be followed to assure samples are collected, transferred, stored, analyzed and destroyed only by authorized personnel. ADH staff that collect samples will be responsible for sample custody, storage and transmittal to applicable laboratories for analysis until samples are relinquished to another authorized person. ADH chain-of-custody forms will document transfer of samples. The chain-of-custody form must be completed prior to each sample transfer and must include the identification of all samples collected, analysis requested, collector's signature(s), date and time of sample collection and relinquishment, and to whom samples are relinquished. The person to whom samples are relinquished must sign the form and complete the time and date of transfer at the time of relinquishment.

In order to assess the representativeness of samples, a field duplicate will be taken and analyzed with air samples. Field duplicates will be collected at the same location, in identical containers, and with the same sampling methodology as actual samples. Analysis of duplicate samples will be by the same methodologies as actual samples.

Authorities and Responsibilities

Sue Casteel, Environmental Epidemiologist and principal investigator, will be responsible for ensuring that all samples collected in this environmental sampling plan are collected in accordance with the above Sampling and Analysis Plan.
