Little Rock -- Officials with the Department of Health and Human Services BreastCare program are seeking nominations for individuals and organizations to be recognized for the annual Josetta Wilkins Award.

The Josetta Wilkins Award, named after former state Rep. Dr. Josetta Wilkins of Pine Bluff, recognizes outstanding individuals and organizations in the fight against breast cancer. Individuals and organizations may be nominated for their efforts in breast cancer education, research, advocacy, treatment, support or services for those in need.

Nomination forms and additional information are available online at www.ArBreastCare.com or by calling Becky Kossover at 501.280.4097. Nominations are due by February 15, 2006.

Previous Josetta Wilkins Award honorees include organizations and individuals around the state who continually provide support in the breast cancer community. Those winners include, Rep. Jay Bradford of Pine Bluff, Dr. David Bourne, the Encore Plus program, White County Medical Center, former state Rep. Bobby Newman of El Dorado, Patsy Bentley of Magnolia, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation – Arkansas and Ozark Affiliates and Jane McDaniel of Jonesboro.

The BreastCare program was established through the efforts of Dr. Josetta Wilkins. It was her determination and persistence in the legislature that led to the passage of the Breast Cancer Act of 1997 and ultimately to the creation of the Arkansas BreastCare program. Since the program’s inception, BreastCare has provided free screening mammograms to more than 60,000 women across Arkansas with little or no insurance. In addition, over 700 cases of breast and cervical cancer have been treated through the BreastCare program.
