Little Rock --
The Division of Health, Arkansas Department of Health and Human Services, has been awarded a $100,000 federal grant by the Health Resources and Services Administrations’ Maternal and Child Health Bureau. The Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Partnership Implementation Grant is to allow states to focus on their resources and needs in providing individuals with TBI and their families with a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, and easily accessible system of care.
Paul Halverson, DrPH, director of the division and state health officer, stated, “The division is very pleased to receive this important grant. Injury is one of the leading causes of death and disability in Arkansas and this grant provides an opportunity to work with our many partners to improve services to individuals affected by a brain injury.”
During the first year, Arkansas plans to complete a needs assessment, conduct focus groups with TBI patients and families, establish a TBI Advisory Board and improve communication and awareness of TBI issues and resources in the state.
Between 1999 and 2001, Arkansas had approximately 2,400 deaths due to TBI and 3,500 hospital discharges with TBI. Forty-one states and territories were awarded Partnership Implementation grants.
