Five members of the Arkansas Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Preparedness staff recently received commendations from the United States Postal Service (USPS) for their contributions to the USPS Bio-Hazard Detection System (BDS) Program. On September 29, 2005, J.T. Simpson, USPS Arkansas District Manager for Emergency Preparedness presented awards and commendation letters from USPS District Manager E.W. Waldemayer, Jr. to DHHS Division of Health Public Health Preparedness Director William Mason, MD; Kathy Hedrick, Public Health Preparedness Deputy Director; Mark Hooker, Strategic National Stockpile Program Coordinator; Darla Davis, Strategic National Stockpile Administrative Assistant and Keith Summerlin, DHHS Central Health Region Emergency Response Coordinator.
The Bio-Hazard Detection System was put in place for the safety of USPS employees and the public. According to Waldemayer commendations were presented because, “The Postal Service recognizes the commitment, cooperation, emergency preparation and response expertise provided by the Arkansas Department of Health were vital to the successful implementation of the USPS Bio-Hazard Detection System Program and the BDS on-site training program. ” The letter also states, “The Arkansas Department of Health and Human Services Division of Health, as an outstanding first-line responder, can continue to help the USPS develop critical elements of the BDS Program.”
