Little

5 to 9 and Feeling Fine: Fruits and Vegetables Anytime! is
this year’s 5 A Day Week theme and encourages
individuals to eat 5 to 9 servings of fruits and
vegetables of assorted colors daily in order to consume
a broad range of nutrients for good health.
The Arkansas Department of Health is encouraging
all Arkansans to recognize this week and increase their
consumption of fruits and vegetables.
Since
the National 5 A Day Program began in 1991, adults and
children have increased their daily fruit and vegetable
consumption by about half a serving.
American adults eat 4.4 servings of fruits and
vegetables a day while children eat an average of 3.4
servings a day, according to the U.S. Department of
Agriculture.
The
National Cancer Institute’s Division of Cancer
Prevention and Control has determined that about 35
percent of all cancer deaths in the United States may be
related to diet.
Research demonstrates that people who consume
five servings of fruits and vegetables a day lowered
their risk for cancer by about 50 percent.
The
Arkansas 5 A Day Coalition is comprised of approximately
40 organizations committed to investing their time and
effort to improve the diet of Arkansans. Since July of
1995, its members have promoted fruit and vegetable
consumption statewide to people of all ages via schools,
worksites, media and various events and activities.
Join
us in making Arkansas an even healthier and happier
state – eat 5 to 9 and feel fine!
