Little Rock — A natural spring located on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive in Little Rock near the intersection of King Drive and 30th Street has tested positive for E. Coli, according to the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH).
Terry Paul, Chief of the Environmental Health Branch, said that this spring has posed problems several times over the last few years, and that samples collected from this spring routinely show the presence of bacteria. A recent sample, collected on July 31, 2009, also showed the presence of E. Coli bacteria.
“Water from springs which are not properly treated should be boiled for at least one minute prior to consumption to assure the safety of the water,” Paul said. “The water coming from this spring is not treated in any way that would make it suitable for human consumption.”
The public should be aware that drinking water from this spring or any other untreated water source could potentially result in water borne illness. Symptoms of such illnesses could include diarrhea, cramps and nausea.
If you have concerns about the safety of your drinking water, you should contact the Pulaski County Health Department local health unit nearest you, and ask to speak to the environmental health specialist in your area.
