In Arkansas for 2008 there were 9 confirmed cases in humans and no deaths. Nationally, there were 1,356 reported cases in humans and 44 deaths from West Nile Virus infection in 2008. |

| February 13, 2008 - Little Rock — The Arkansas Department of Health is reminding Arkansans that AIDS is one of the leading killers of African Americans nationwide. It is the number one cause of death for African American women ages 25-34 years. African Americans are usually slower to seek testing, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and progress from HIV diagnosis to AIDS much more quickly as a result. |

Health Department Update on Tuberculosis and Hansen’s Disease in Northwest Arkansas |

| February 8, 2008 - The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) is receiving reports from concerned citizens about a possible outbreak of 300 plus cases of tuberculosis (TB) and an outbreak of Hansen’s Disease (leprosy) in Benton, Washington and Sebastian counties). There are no outbreaks of either disease in the state. |

Rabid Dog Reported in Ft. Smith |

| February 7, 2008 - A family’s pet dog, living in residential Fort Smith, has been confirmed rabid by the Arkansas Department of Health this week. The dog became ill around Jan. 31, and progressively declined until it was euthanized and submitted for rabies testing. Several people exposed to this dog will be undergoing a series of rabies vaccinations to prevent the development of the disease. |

Free Tetanus Shots Offered |

| February 7, 2008 - The Arkansas Department of Health will be offering free tetanus shots to anyone who needs one at a special clinic that has been set up at the Matthews Civic Center at 101 W Main in Atkins. The clinic will open at 9:00 a.m. today and will be open until 3:00 p.m. or until supplies of tetanus vaccine run out. |

| February 6, 2008 - Little Rock — Officials from the Arkansas Department of Health have reported that storm damage has caused the closing of the Van Buren Health Unit located in Clinton. Area residents are being directed to heath units in Marshall (Searcy County) and Morrilton (Conway County) for all routine services until further notice. |

Health Department Reports Rabid Skunk in Independence County |

| February 4, 2008 - A skunk killed in Independence County has been confirmed rabid by the Arkansas Department of Health. No humans were exposed but unfortunately 2 dogs, both lacking current rabies vaccinations, were. Rabies is a virus that attacks the brain and spinal cord and is a fatal disease. |
