The physical appearance of water does not always reflect its bacteriological content. Water is tested for bacteriological content on a monthly basis by the Department of Health for the purpose of protecting the public health. Inorganic chemical compounds such as iron, manganese, and other sediments can give water an unsightly appearance, without affecting its microbiological quality. Thus, the water may look or smell bad, and still be safe. (Tony Ramick)
