Little Rock -- A new program for Hispanic mothers and children in Southwest Little Rock gets underway on Friday, August 29, 2008, at 9:00 a.m. at the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Central Office, located at Freeway Medical Building Boardroom, Room 906. United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) officials, local community representatives, and health department officials and staff, plan to attend.

This new WIC outreach program is patterned after the Community Outreach/Promotoras Program of Texas A&M University, College of Architecture, Center for Housing and Urban Development. WIC program director, Marcell W. Jones, says that the new outreach program uses bilingual personnel, and serves to introduce the WIC Program to the growing Hispanic population who might otherwise be unfamiliar with the nutritional benefits of WIC.

“We’re very excited to begin Arkansas’ first WIC Promotora Project in Little Rock,” said Jones. “Our program serves many Latino families in an urban setting and our outreach workers, known as Promotoras, will give us a very effective way to reach moms and children who are potentially eligible for WIC.”

Oscar Muñoz, Deputy Director of the Promotoras Program for Texas A&M, will be very active in this project, providing hands-on training, guidance and consultation during the formation and initiation of this new outreach project.

For more information on this event or the WIC Program, please contact the WIC Office at 501-661-2508 or visit http://www.healthyarkansas/WIC.

WIC is an equal opportunity provider.
