Five States Sign Interstate Regional Consensus Statement on Stroke

March 9, 2010 - Little Rock -Arkansas has joined Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee in signing the Interstate Regional Consensus Statement on Stroke. State Health Officers from all five states have now signed the statement, which recognizes the Delta Stroke Network Project as a new approach to help reduce the incidence of stroke in the region.
The Delta Stroke Network Project is led by Namvar Zohoori, M.D., Chronic Disease Director at the Arkansas Department of Health. The project is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Public Health Nursing Association of Arkansas Day

February 24, 2010 - Little Rock -The Public Health Nursing Association of Arkansas (PHNAA) Section of the Arkansas Public Health Association (APHA) has scheduled “A Day of Appreciation and Celebration” for public health nurses of Arkansas. The First Christian Church in Little will be the site of the celebration on Saturday, February 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Public health nurses will be recognized for their hard work during the rounds of mass flu clinics and school clinics recently completed in all seventy-five counties of Arkansas.

101,000 nationwide could join 2010 competition

February 23, 2010 - Little Rock -Representatives from more than 200 companies and groups throughout Arkansas and the nation gathered today to share their “hype” at the kickoff of the 2010 Blue & You Fitness Challenge held at the Statehouse Convention Center. Governor Mike Beebe declared today “Blue & You Fitness Challenge” Day in Arkansas in recognition of the seventh annual competition to promote wellness in the community and at the worksite. “Fitness: all it’s hyped up to be” was the theme of the kickoff as companies and groups offered their checkpoint cheers of commitment to the Challenge, whether for 30, 60 or 92 virtual checkpoints across America.

Rabid Dog Reported in Imboden

February 3, 2010 - Little Rock -A family’s pet dog, living in the community of Imboden in Lawrence County, has been confirmed rabid by the Arkansas Department of Health this week. The dog became ill around January 25, and progressively declined until it was euthanized and submitted for rabies testing. Several people who were exposed to the dog will be undergoing a series of rabies vaccinations to prevent the development of the disease. The dog was an inside/outside dog and stayed in a fenced yard when outside, but had not been vaccinated against rabies. The dog had been sprayed by a skunk a month or two ago, but the disease cannot be transmitted in skunk spray. Undoubtedly he had been bitten as well, although no skunk was seen or found in the yard.

State Public Health Laboratory Receives Accreditation from
College of American Pathologists

February 1, 2010 - Little Rock -The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) Public Health Laboratory has been awarded accreditation by the Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists, based on the results of a recent onsite inspection.

The laboratory’s director, Dr. Glen Baker, was advised of this national recognition in a report praising the department for the “excellence of the services being provided.” Dr. Baker said, “I am so proud of the staff and the outstanding work that has been done to achieve this endorsement. Our exceptional colleagues work so hard protecting the health of Arkansans every day. This recognition is a testimony to their efforts.”

Health Department, Private Providers Give Over 500,000 Doses of H1N1 Vaccine

January 21, 2010 - Little Rock -Since the vaccine became available just over three months ago, the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) and private providers have given over 500,000 doses of the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine. Exact numbers are not known, according to the ADH, because reporting and data input from private providers (hospitals, physicians, clinics and pharmacies) won’t be complete until later in the season.

It’s Not Too Late to Vaccinate!

January 11, 2010 - Little Rock -The Arkansas Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are reminding Arkansans that it’s not too late to vaccinate for seasonal and H1N1 influenza. There is plenty of vaccine available free at local health units in each county and vaccine is available for a minimal charge at a large number of pharmacies and doctor’s offices around the state. This week (January 10-16, 2010) is also National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) established to highlight the importance of continuing influenza vaccination as well as fostering greater use of flu vaccine after the holiday season.

Health Department Ranks at the Top For Preparedness

December 15, 2009 - Little Rock -The Trust for America’s Health (TFAH) today released its annual review of public health emergency preparedness and found Arkansas to be among the best in the nation, based on information obtained from independent sources.
The report found that 20 states scored six or less out of 10 key indicators of public health emergency preparedness.  Nearly two-thirds of states scored seven or less.  Eight states tied for the highest score of nine out of 10: Arkansas, Delaware, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, and Vermont.

New Rabies Law for State

December 1, 2009 - Little Rock -The updated Rabies Control Act has new rules passed by the State Board of Health that allow for a longer interval between rabies vaccinations for dogs and cats. The new rules will become effective January 1, 2010.The updated Rabies Control Act was passed by the Arkansas State Legislature in 2009 (Act 159). Under the new rules, all dogs and cats four months of age or older will be required to have a rabies vaccination given by a licensed veterinarian. Currently no age limit is specified for initial vaccinations.

Second Round of Mass Flu Clinics to Begin December 7

November 30, 2009 - Little Rock -The second round of statewide mass vaccination clinics designed to immunize Arkansans against both seasonal and H1N1 influenza will begin next Monday (December 7), the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) announced today.The unprecedented effort will continue through December 18. During the two-week period, clinics will be held in nearly every county, according to Randy Lee, Director of ADH’s Center for Local Public Health.

ADH Plans Second Round of Mass Flu Clinics

November 23, 2009 - Little Rock - The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) is planning a second round of mass vaccination clinics across the state to immunize Arkansans against both seasonal and H1N1 influenza. Tentatively, the second round of clinics is set to begin on December 7, according to Randy Lee, director of ADH’s Center for Local Public Health. However, Lee emphasized that the starting date will have to be pushed back if the health department has not received enough vaccine by that time.

Health Department Confirms More Swine Flu Deaths - Officials Say At-Risk Populations Need to Check with Private Providers if Symptomatic

November 19, 2009 - Little Rock -The number of confirmed deaths in Arkansas from the H1N1 flu has now risen to 20, according to the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH). Additional vaccine supplies for protection against H1N1 flu are arriving in the state, and more is on the way. People in all of the higher risk groups (including pregnant women, people caring for infants under 6 months, health-care and EMS personnel, people 6 months – 24 years and people 25-64 with underlying medical conditions) can begin to check with their providers to get protection from the H1N1 flu. Over 900 facilities in the state have expressed an interest in being able to distribute H1N1 vaccine, and vaccine is currently being shipped to some of those providers depending upon supply.

Health Department Announces Budget Cuts

November 04, 2009 - Little Rock - The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) has announced today a specific plan for the $3,631,885 in budget cuts that had been asked for by Governor Beebe last week.
“This has been a very careful process that we have followed, as we looked at the areas where we felt that we can postpone or reschedule projects that we would very much like to do, but simply cannot afford right now,” said Paul K. Halverson, DrPH, Director of Health and State Health Officer.

172,873 Doses of Seasonal Flu Vaccine and H1N1 Vaccine Given at Mass Flu Clinics Statewide

November 03, 2009 - Little Rock -In one of the largest mass vaccination efforts in the state’s history, the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) is reporting that to date a total of 172,873 doses of seasonal flu vaccine and H1N1 vaccine were given at Mass Flu Clinics across the state. At the statewide Mass Flu Clinics, 148,961 doses of seasonal flu vaccine and 23,912 doses of H1N1 vaccine were given to Arkansans.

June 26, 2009 - Little Rock —The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) is reporting the first human case of West Nile virus infection in Arkansas this year. In Arkansas for 2008 there were 9 confirmed cases in humans and no deaths. Nationally, there were 1,356 reported cases in humans and 44 deaths from West Nile Virus infection in 2008.

May 1, 2009 - Little Rock No probable cases of the new influenza A /H1N1 virus have been confirmed yet in Arkansas, according to William Mason, M.D., Branch Chief for Preparedness and Response at the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH). The number of people infected with the virus continues to grow nationwide, with 141 cases in 19 states being confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Health Department Issues Guidance on Swine Flu Outbreak
April 30, 2009 - Little Rock The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) is reporting that there are no confirmed cases or probable cases of swine flu in Arkansas. According to William Mason, M.D., Preparedness and Response Branch Chief, all influenza tests to date that have come to the Public Health Laboratory have been identified and are not swine flu.

Emergency Kits Distributed in Arkansas May Contain
Tainted Peanut Butter,
FEMA Says
February 5, 2009 - Little Rock Disaster relief meal kits may contain peanut butter that is linked to the national Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak that has made more than 500 people ill and has been associated with eight deaths since September of last year. The meal kits were distributed in Arkansas as a part of the relief and recovery effort following the ice storm that has left as much as a third of the state without power for more than a week so far.

Public Health Workers Involved in Recovery Efforts
February 3, 2009 - Little Rock Conditions on the ground in parts of northern Arkansas are still very bad following last week’s ice storm and the subsequent power outages, and disaster recovery efforts are on-going. Under Governor Beebe’s leadership, state federal and local agencies, utility companies, retailers and volunteers are struggling with the result of the worst ice storm in recent memory. Public health workers are providing emergency shelters for utility workers, volunteers and those with no warm place to live, while working to protect Arkansans from some serious health threats that are emerging.

Health Department Sets New Record for Mass Dispensing
Flu Exercise
November 20, 2008 - Little Rock — The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) set a new record for its Mass Dispensing Flu Exercise and immunized 123,172 Arkansans against influenza last week. The shots were dispensed during the mass flu vaccination clinics held statewide in 81 health units. All 75 counties were involved again this year, but the totals significantly surpassed last year’s number of 103,541 vaccinations for the exercise.
