How do I report a safety problem with a consumer product or find out about the latest product recalls?

Call the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission HOTLINE at 1-800-638-CPSC. If you have a product complaint or want to report a product-related injury, you will speak directly to a Hotline operator. The Hotline staff is available between 8:30am and 5:00 pm Eastern time, Monday through Friday, except Holidays. INTERNET SERVICES: To get product recall information, gopher to: cpsc.gov. To file a product complaint or report an injury, their Internet address is: info@cpsc.gov.

Does the state have a poison control center?

Yes, the Poison Control Center's HOTLINE number is 1-800-3POISON. It is staffed by the College of Pharmacy at UAMS. Always store household cleaners, medicines, and vitamins out of young kids' reach.

Child Restraints in Arkansas

Must be in child restraint - An approved child safety seat is required for children 5 years and younger and less than 60 pounds.

An adult safety belt is permissible for children ages 6 through 14 years or 60+ pounds

Maximum fine 1st offense is $100. The law states no preference for rear seat.

Primary seat belt law went into effect June 30, 2009
Act 308 of 2009, which changes the state's seat belt law from a secondary to a primary offense, goes into effect today. The change means that law enforcement officers can stop and ticket you specifically for not wearing a belt ($25 fine).

How effective are smoke detectors and where should I place them in my home?

Install smoke detectors on every level of your home, inside each bedroom, and outside each bedroom area. The chances of dying in a fire are cut in half by the presence of a working smoke detector. Test your smoke detector once a month and change the batteries at least once a year.

What is a safe temperature for my hot water heater?

Water heaters should be set no higher than 120 F to prevent scald burns. If your water heater does not have a degrees control, set your water heater at low or warm.
